Women’s Track & Field Team Honored
Butte College athletes were recently honored for their scholastic achievements by the California Community College Athletic Association.
The Butte College Women’s Track and Field Team was among the Top 10 recipients of the 2010 Scholar Team award.
The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. All team members must have excelled academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher. The honor is also based on the team’s demonstration of better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.
The Women’s Track and Field Team, with a 2009-2010 team GP of 3.32, were selected from among more than 100 teams in California for the Scholar Team award.
“We are proud that our teams and athletes excel in the classroom in addition to their various sports activities,” said Craig Rigsbee, athletic director.
The Scholar Team members honored were: Angelica Cahee, Samantha Christensen, Mary Finn, Nibretye Green-Jackson, Anja Grueterich, Rae Haley, Jamie Jin, Sonya Lucatero, Bridget McClarrinon, Leanna Nelson, Sarah Nichols, Amanda Oliva, Sisarie Sherry, Kelli Stanley, Mallory Vader and Chantal Vanderbilt.
A word from the Coach
We just finished the State Championships at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster this past weekend. I am excited to announce that Sarah Nichols successfully defended her State Heptathlon title and also took 1st place in the Javelin and 5th in the High Jump. For her performance, she was awarded as the Female Field Athlete of the Meet and was an All American in both events she won. She was also named the NorCal Field Athlete of the Year for 2010. Our next All American for the women was Kelli Stanley finishing 4th in the Heptathlon. Both girls had a big day in the Long Jump on day 2 of the Heptathlon. Sarah took 1st place at 18’ 30.25” and Kelli took 2nd at 18’ 3”. Angelica Cahee finished 7th in the Triple Jump with a jump of 37’ 0.25”. Our Women’s 4 x 100 team, made up of Amanda Oliva, Kelli Stanley, Angelica Cahee and Chantal Vanderbilt, finished 8th at 50.34. Bridget McClarrinnon was 9th in the Javelin (110’ 6”). Jamie Jin came home at 10th in the Shot Put (38’ 0.25”). Mary Finn was 12th in the 5000 (20:43.68). As a team, our Women finished 10th in the State and 5th in the North.
Our highest finish on the Men’s side was in the Hammer. Bryce Barden was our 4th All American of the meet and finished 3rd overall with a toss of 174’ 4”. Next was Phil Davis, placing 5th in the Shot Put (49’ 6”) and 7th in the Discus (166’ 4”). Rashad Ross brought back a pair of 8th place finishes in the 200 (22.10) and the 400 (49.44). Anthony Palfrey finished 8th in a very competitive Long Jump competition at 23’ 11”. Will Castillo took 12th in the Javelin (137’ 1”). As a team, the Men finished 19th in the State and 8th in the North.
Over the last two seasons we have set 61 new top 10 records on the Women’s side and broke 9 of the #1 all time marks (Heptathlon, Javelin, Shot Put, Hammer and 4 x 100). The Men have set 29 new records and have broken 2 (400 and 4 x 400). We have had 12 different athletes (10 local) ranked in 17 events in the top 25 in the Nation over this time. We also have 5 All Americans (all local), Sarah Nichols was a 4 time All American (took 1st in the Heptathlon both years, 1st in the Javelin in 2010 and 4th in the Long Jump in 2009). Also, 41 of our 83 kids that have competed at Conference in the last two years have qualified for the NorCal Finals.
We are dedicated to developing a quality and competitive Men and Women’s program. Our goal is to create a positive academic and athletic environment and help them move on to the 4 year level if desired. Eleven of our thirteen athletes that qualified for State this year are from our section. Last year, it was eight out of eleven kids from the area. That’s 18 out of 24 over the past two seasons! We would love an opportunity to bring in more local talent and share in this success. If you would like more information please contact me at 530-895-2318 or by email at snellingro@butte.edu.
