Fire Academy Overview:                                                                                                                     The Butte Fire Academy has been in the business of training future firefighters for over 30 years. The standards of the program are founded on the belief that only intelligent, skillful, strong, and adaptable people of good character are suitable for the fire service. The life-safety services provided by modern fire departments demand these skills and abilities, and our program is dedicated to providing the necessary training to augment the natural talents of our students.

Days & Times:
The Fire Academy meets Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, for 19 weeks. Some weekends are required.

Units:
29 semester units & .5 unit of Critical Skills Workshop

  The fees listed above DO NOT include living expenses.

 

Out of state students will be charged $200 per unit above the initial fee.  Financial Aid (530) 895-2311 and/or Veteran's benefits (530) 895-2566 may be available through Butte College for qualified students.


Certification:
The Fire Academy conforms to standards for certification by the California Board of Fire Services.  Upon successful completion, the student is eligible for certification as an NREMT and is academically qualified for state certification as a Fire Fighter I, as well as certifications for: Calfire Basic Firefighter, CalFire Basic Wildland Firefighter, Low Angle Rescue, Incident Command System 100 & 200, Terrorism Consequence Management, Vehicle Extrication, Fire Control 3, Confined Space Awareness, Swift Water Rescue, Rapid Intervention Crew Tactics, Hazardous Materials-First Responder Operational, Firefighter Survival.

Pre-Requisites:                                                                                                           None.  It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that a 40-hour First Responder course be taken by non-EMT/Paramedics to prepare for the EMT portion of the Academy.  This course can be used on CAL-Fire applications.

Application Process:
All applicants will be required to:

  1. Complete the Pre-Enrollment application and return it with:
    • A copy of your Reading and English assessment scores if test is taken at another college OR a copy of your college diploma. (Reading Level IV and English Level III is mandatory. Testing will be waived with an AA/AS or higher degree.) High School transcripts will NOT be accepted.
    • Provide an accurate email address on the Pre-Enrollment application that is checked often, ALL correspondence will be via email.
  2. Obtain a Butte College ID # by completing the Butte College Online Application
  3. Attend one mandatory Fire Academy Orientation. Dates are listed below.
  4. Complete a Personal History Packet, which must include a copy of your High School Diploma / GED. (Distributed after above qualifications have been met.)
  5. At a designated date all qualified applicants will be entered into a lottery.

 The first 50 students will:

  • Complete a provided medical packet, including a doctor's release.
  • Show evidence of a current (throughout the Academy) CPR certification. This CPR card must include: Adult 1 & 2 Rescuer CPR, Child & Infant CPR, Adult, Child & Infant Obstructed Airway Maneuvers. The American Heart Association Health Care Provider or equivalent is the suggested source.
  • Take note of Butte College's "7 Days to Pay" Policy and make financial arrangements accordingly.

Uniforms:
All participants will be required to wear the Butte College Fire Academy uniform.  Details will be sent to those who are accepted.

Housing:                                                                                                                       There is no housing on campus.  Chico State's Craig Hall dormitory and special housing (houses & apartments) are available to Butte College students, 1-800-559-1393. A listing of off campus housing can be found at www.butte.och101.com

LocationButte College is located between Chico and Oroville.  You can reach the college by taking Durham-Pentz Rd - off Highway 99, or Clark Rd - off Highway 70.  The Fire Academy office is located in the Allied Health and Public Services (AHPS) Building, in room 144.

Transportation:
There will be some off-campus training.  Cadets are responsible for their own transportation (up to a 45-minute drive/ride-along program).  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

Physical or learning disabilities will not disqualify you from entering this Academy.  However, it is your responsibility to contact Disabled Student Services at (530) 895-2455 (identify yourself as a Fire Academy student) prior to the starting date of the Academy.  Any time spent away from the classroom regarding this matter will not be acceptable.

An individual requiring a specific accommodation should contact the Fire Academy as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days prior to the start of class.

Orientation:
The mandatory Fire Academy orientation will cover what will be expected of you physically, mentally, and academically. Fire Academy procedures as well as a tour of the Fire Training Grounds will be included in this 3-hour presentation.  No one will be allowed to continue with the Fire Academy application process without proof they have attended one of these orientation sessions.

Active military personnel currently deployed out of the area and therefore unable to attend one of these dates should contact the Academy office at (530) 895-2402 for possible alternatives.

We also encourage students who are thinking about a career in the fire service or who are planning to attend a future session of the Academy to attend.  Our intention is for the potential candidate to be well informed and prepared for a successful experience at our Fire Academy. **Family members are encouraged to attend**
