Eliminated - CMST 9 (Intercultural Communication)

CMST 9 (Intercultural Communication) has been eliminated as a prerequisite since all sections for Spring 2012 are full with students on waitlist already. However, we still highly recommend CMST 9 to all interested students, especially if you plan to complete the Peace and Global Studies certificate.  Please contact our office if you have any questions.

 

SPANISH COURSES:

SPAN 2 - Second Semester Spanish (4 units)
Prerequisite: SPAN 1; Recommended Prep: Reading Level III; English Level III; Transfer Status: CSU/UC; 68 Hours Lecture

Continuation of the understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills. Continued study of structural elements. Total Immersion Spanish enhanced by small group instruction and family stay in Costa Rica.

SPAN 3 - Third Semester Spanish (4 units)
Prerequisite: SPAN 2 (See Foreign Language Enrollment Level Policy Statement); Recommended Prep: Reading Level III; English Level III; Transfer Status: CSU/UC; 68 Hours Lecture

Continuation of the understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills. Grammatical resumes. Reading selections from the Hispanic world. Total Immersion Spanish enhanced by small group instruction and family stay in Costa Rica.

SPAN 4 - Fourth Semester Spanish (4 units)
Prerequisite: SPAN 3 (See Foreign Language Enrollment Level Policy Statement); Recommended Prep: Reading Level III; English Level III; Transfer Status: CSU/UC; 68 Hours Lecture

SPAN 95 - Special Studies (3 units)
For students who have completed SPAN 4
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor; Transfer Status: CSU

This course provides an opportunity for serious lower division students to carry out a supervised individual field, laboratory, or library research project in a subject area relevant to their major and is designed primarily for students studying in areas not covered by the curriculum. Any student interested in registering for a Special Studies course should contact a full-time instructor in the appropriate area no later than the last day of the tenth week of instruction. 17-51 hours lecture or 51-153 hours lab. Since skills and proficiencies are enhanced by supervised repetition and practice, this course may be repeated to a maximum of 3 units. In Costa Rica, Spanish 95 will offer the study of Costa Rican short stories.

SPAN 100 - Beginning Conversational Spanish (3 units)
Transfer Status: NT; 51 Hours Lecture

In this course emphasis is on the development of understanding and speaking skills. Minimal emphasis is placed on formal grammar. Multimedia cultural presentations are offered throughout the semester. This course is intended for those who wish to develop survival Spanish in everyday basic situations. Total Immersion Spanish enhanced by small group instruction and family stay in Costa Rica.

SPAN 101 - Intermediate Conversational Spanish (3 units)
Prerequisite: SPAN 100; Transfer Status: NT; 51 Hours Lecture

In this course continued emphasis is on the development of understanding and speaking skills. Minimal emphasis is placed on formal grammar. Multimedia cultural presentations are offered throughout the course. This course is intended for those who wish to continue development of survival Spanish in everyday situations. Total Immersion Spanish enhanced by small group instruction and family stay in Costa Rica.

 

PSYCHOLOGY & INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSES:

PSY 34: Eastern Psychology Thru Yoga Traditions & Practices (3 units)
Recommended Prep: Reading Level IV; English Level IV; Transfer Status: CSU; 
51 Hours Lecture 

This is an introductory study, theory, and practice of Eastern Psychology. The psychological foundation for study will highlight Hatha Yoga postures, breathing techniques, mental concentration,and meditation. The merger between modern Psychology and Yoga Psychology will be emphasized. This course is experiential and designed for self-enhancement, relaxation and stress management, increased mindfulness and social awareness.

PSY 95 - Special Studies (3 units)

IDST 94: Introduction to Service Learning (1 unit)
Recommended Prep: Reading Level IV; English Level IV; Math Level II;
Transfer Status: CSU; 17 Hours Lecture

Introduction to Service Learning is intended for students and instructors who have a strong interest in linking community service and academic learning. It is based on a cooperative effort between the student, a faculty member, and a community based organization, school, business entity or campus setting to provide real-world experience in a field of interest while at the same time filling a need in the community. This course may also provide the service-learning component for a student enrolled in any approved class. Since skills/proficiencies are enhanced by supervised repetition and practice, this course may be repeated three times.

IDST 90: Special Topics (1 unit)
Recommended Prep: Reading Level III; English Level III; Transfer Status: CSU;
17 Hours Lecture

This is a course designed to enrich the educational experience of Butte College students by offering them the opportunity of attending and participating in extra-curricular activities of various kinds. Students will attend a minimum of eight events sponsored by Butte College, each of which will require an average of two hours. No materials fees, but some activities might have an entrance fee (for example, drama productions). Since skills/proficiencies are enhanced by supervised repetition and practice, each topic may be repeated two times. Pass/No Pass Only.
